Big Waves, Little Waves, God's Got Us!

Recently I was sitting on the beach watching the sea. Occasionally, what looked like a really big wave would come rolling in to the shore and I'd brace myself for it crashing, and then the big wave would actually turn out to be a very tiny wave that would gently break on the sand.

Deep inside me, I carry a great sense of panic which means that I often look at my life and see these great waves of uncertainty, worry, fear, rejection, guilt and embarrassment come rolling in, and then life moves along a bit and I realise those huge waves are actually very tiny and sometimes non-existent. I am calm for a while, and then along comes the next wave!

"Turn your eyes upon Jesus

Look full in his wonderful face

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim

In the light of his glory and grace"

In the moments when I Iook at my life and am overwhelmed, I love to sing the lines of the hymn above, because it reminds me that Jesus' perspective is not the same as my perspective and God is much bigger than the things that trouble me. In theory, this means that I never have to worry about being overwhelmed, but in practice I often forget to turn my eyes to Jesus.

"When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown." - Isaiah 43:2

May you be reminded of this promise when the waves seem overwhelming,

Beth
